This River

How to paint this river's rush what color do I use to make it warm when the sun shines and cool in the cloud's shadow? What kind of brush would cause the sound of rapids washed across rocks like an unchanging wind? There is no canvas that splashes cold mountain water onto your shocked skin Or pushes sand between your toes. I have never seen paint that smells of pine and earth. What mortal artist could capture the endlessness of outdoor nights? Who could portray the slipperiness of a salamander in your hand? And who would think to add that small, lost dog so free and unhurried that graciously accepted a gift of food and companionship Then, as easily, said goodbye. written while I was camping... I just had to 'paint' it Written March 31st, 2002 © on Mar 31 2002 02:06 AM PST, R. T. Howard   0 • 9
