Freethinking Slaves

By Rambler

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

Intricate sophistries abound Dressed in gaudy plausibilities Reasonable facsimilies of meaning Filling minds while starving spirits Medals of malnourishment Worn as proud olympic attainment Supposed free thinkers Embracing freedom to chains Their liberty a babe's blanket Failing under night's chill Finding in ego's shivers Perversity of warmth They are reference point and compass A law unto themselves Drawing certainty from any source Bearing their dim reflections Comfort tendered from the many Trapped in the amber of illusion Wisdom calls their names Ears interpreting only Faint whispers of a leprous stranger Yet unavoidable choice Will one day assail all senses True freedom or slavery Defined from without Regarding not their self-appointments As suns In solar systems of meaning Clarity will engulf vision Or sophistry will fade to black Painting a perpetual horizon of loneliness Written February 21st, 2002 © on Feb 20 2002 11:10 PM PST, Bruce Newman   0 • 13
