The Red Haired Boy

By Smeagol

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

There was a ruddy farmer who lived by the oceanside Who took a fair flaxen haired lassie for his bride Now the farmer and the lassie gave out a cry of joy There had good cheer for within a year out popped a red haired boy The red hair lad grew handsome and he grew up strong His eyes were bright his teeth were white and his legs were long He tried to be a farmer but said "it's not for me" His mother cried as he said goodbye and headed out to sea Now the lad became a sailor the best in all the land But by the light try as he might he could just not understand Why after all his troubles his pockets were still empty So the red haired lad took down the flag and turned to piracy The terror of the high seas he sailed around the world But he never killed an honest man or ever harmed a girl But he made the rich old King as mad has a grizzly bear He sent his best to lay to rest the pirate with red hair But the red haired lad was crafty and he sailed away And with no harm he returned to the farm on a chilly winter's day His mother and his father had managed to grow old But it gave them joy to see their boy with several bags of gold Now the pirate he retired right there on the oceanside He found a fair flaxen haired maiden for his bride And the pirate and the lassie made a bonny home And they cried for joy when there came a boy with red hair of his own Written February 8th, 2002 © on Feb 08 2002 10:32 AM PST   0 • 10
