The Visit

By TangledWings

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

At first it was relatively awkward, But we managed I respected that you didn't assume you'd receive a hug Though you were my uncle, and I,your neice. The circumstances that brought us together Were upsetting and I knew You would feel out of place But we soon formed a bond When we discovered we had more than just a love for the Beatles in common. I knew we were kindred spirits We shared similar views And you understood me unlike The rest of our easily-influenced family Because of my melancholy attitude I could relate to your black-sheepish ways And I had decided months prior to your visit That although I heard somewhat negative Accusations about you, I would most likely appreciate you even more. We had philosophical discussions And you listened to me question God I admired your outlandish spirit And I thought it intriguing that You could speak such wonderful Chinese I enjoyed your fascinating stories of life And I was priviledged that you could Share in such a memorable moment in my life. I felt honored that you called me an artist Considering that you were so educated And suddenly,as soon as it all came, The visit had to end... I fear I won't see you again Till I am of legal drinking age And another five years will go by Although you just left ten minutes ago I can still smell your charming scent And my eyes get misty You were my one relative who truly Understood me We were two peas in a pod,you and I, And I now realize Why saying "hello" is easier Than saying "goodbye".
