Legend Of The Sea
By thespin
DRIFTING: Borne along by the currents. I spread myself over the rage. Caught in a limbo of sea and sky. GLIDING: The winds carry me back. Whispering and echoing voices from the past. Spray and foam shape images. WANDERING: Memories rise and fall with each swelling of the waves. Diving deep the waves catch me in their enbrace. In their spray I am renewed. SOARING: I hug the rocky coasts, searching. Lighthouses and fishing villages beckon me. Salt, rock, and brim, they bathe me. Luring me back. Church bells chime. Ringing in a lost part of me. I RECALL My New England home. Two faces in the mist of time. Ebbing and fading. In and out. Pebbles caught in the sand. Ghost lost in the fog of me. REMEMBERING: I see a ship fighting its anchor. Trying to tear itself free. Tears are added to the sea. Kisses, embraces, farewells. Familes left behind. Days dissolve in to years. Eyes straining the horizons. And then,a shout. "There-she-blows,There-she-blows." Oars pull at the face of the ocean. A small boat races to meet its destiny. Salt cured hands pull and heave, parting the waters. ABOVE: God looks down and spreads His hands upon the seas. The ocean becomes a tempest. The gulls circle and soar. Waiting. Vultures of the deep. God breathes. Creaking the surface with His breath. BELOW: Satan is let loose. His black oiled filled body blocks the sun. Sprouting water,he screams for life. Prayers and shouts fill the air. Cold steel meets warm flesh. Rebellion. Satan will not be tied down. He wants our souls. Rays of light bread through the ocean's blue green. Dead beacons look towards the heavens. Satan leaps and destroys. He drags us down with him. We have lost the fight. UNDERNEATH: Faces float by like pennies tossed in the fountain. Down into the depths of Hell we go. AT THE BOTTOM: A light shines through the darkness. Spiraling, wheeling, turning, revolving out of a cocoon. We all soar higher and higher towards the light. Finally tearing free form the depths. We are transformed. Reborned. Seagulls. This poem is based on an old legend about sea captains. The legend goes when they die they become seagulls. This idea intrigued me and I wrote a poem about it.I also, added a story of my own. I think it has other things to say. Please, let me know what you think. Thank you. Written November 3rd, 2001 © on Nov 02 2001 11:38 PM PST 0 • 10
