The Old Gunfighter
By TractorMan
Out just beyond the town Way out here in the West Lived an old gunfighter folks call Gus Some say he was the best Long since retired now And working on his farm If you went by to visit Look for him working in his barn Gus lives a peaceful life now No need anymore to prove himself What he did for our small town Is greater than any rich man's wealth Many a young gunslinger Having heard the legend of his name Would ride confidently into our town But the results were always the same A challenge to our local hero They would promptly lay down Hoping to goad and rope him into Proving who really was the fastest around When it came time to shootin’ Gus’d calmly unholster his gun Onto the ground he'd toss it Turn around and away he’d run Flustered and confused The young gunfighters they’d say Would saddle up their horses And ride quietly away You might think it cowardly That he ran home to his wife But Gus had spared the town a funeral And also saved another man’s life Written October 2nd, 2001 © on Oct 02 2001 01:41 AM PST 0 • 10
