Hand Grenade
By Walter Burns
I kicked a rock today And cut my giant toe I stopped to watch the flowers But they didn’t even grow I saw a friend I used to like But she said she didn’t know Anyone quite like me: “A circus side freakshow” I told my mom and dad I was good and they were glad But then I spilled some soda And quickly they were mad What could I just do Is there even such a thing? That promised it would work out right And end my losing string I sit and often staring The teacher thinks I’m daring To get her heart a racing If she asked I would be sharing That the world is so unjust And I’m filled with wanderlust I think she popped a vessel And I think she even cussed I drew my Uncle Dave With gun and hand grenade Teacher kicked me out of school And I got a failing grade The assignment I only did And I’m just a little kid Take away my innocence And slap the word “Forbid” I kicked a rock today And cut my giant toe I stopped to watch the flowers But they didn’t even grow I saw a friend I used to like And I hit her just for show Is there anyone quite like me And to whom my vengeance owe?
