The Distance
Stormy day Rain won't stop pouring Why does death strike so hard? Blown away I'm no longer soaring Lord, I simply can't go this far Anyway This lion's stopped roaring Clay's all dried up in this jar Down to lay My tears are of mourning Lost a loved one, now taken afar I'm drowning in tears of woe This burden's too heavy, please free my heart I failed to save him, now he has to go Confused and empty, my soul's ripping apart Why does this nightmare have to be so? Lift my spirit, Lord, I'll make a new start Lift my spirit, Lord, I'll make a new start [REFRAIN] I'll go the distance That I once could not see I'll shout the message Even if I'm dropped to my knees I'll be the person Better than I ever could be I'll go the distance The slaves gotta be set free I'll share the life you've poured into me A ray of light pierces the storm Death is but a beginning to live His spirit's elsewhere, no longer need to mourn To you, life is but a gift to give You know the death, for you once were in my form I guess that's why you're so willing to forgive I guess that's why you're so willing to forgive [REFRAIN 2X] Now the light is filling my soul I stand up, knowing you're in control Crying no longer, I burst with a shout Death isn't final--there is a way out He's watching me from a cloud above A smile appears, full of pure love Thus I know my path's only begun Out of my way, devil, there's a race to be won! This was a song I wrote during my senior year of high school, when I was even more an amateur writer/musician than I am now. This was written to reflect on losing my grandfather in '96, and how it changed my life forever. I did a rough recording of the song with a friend who would lead me to become the guitar player I am today, and I also did a theatrical performance of this song in my theater class my senior year. This one serves as a personal reminder of who I am even today, and always will. Coming back to this definately brings back memories . . .
