By the Lake, Asleep
By Brazos
I awake with a start, aside the lake It is early, the moon still shows The air is misty, short sight can I take Sun shines thru the mist, and it glows I have slept against a tree, you see Drunken man, no cares I do show The ducks are running, round the sea Do they quack to me? I don’t know For I have been so drunk, for so long That I am not sure that I am awake The story of my life make’s a good song But the end of it, is anyone’s take But I am still alive today, here by the lake And it seems like I have been here oft before I reach for my bottle, my thirst to slake But ‘tis empty, I “killed” it afore To drunk to move, I now lay still Waiting for whatever comes up Perhaps I’ll drown in my own swill Perhaps I’ll sleep, and ne’er wake up Wait, I see a man and woman Standing betwixt me and the lake He’s talking to me, is the man Handing me money that I take Says it’s from Jimmy, my lost son Who I drove off with my drinkin’ Infantry now, he carries a gun Across a desert, he’s slinking I close my eyes, I see him now! Huddling on the side of a hill Jimmy, I will change, I do vow But, unhearing, he remains still. God save his soul, and God curse mine He would be here if not for me I lie by a lake in decline He lies in Afghanistan, you see?3rd in a series "by the lake", the first being "Jimmy's Song". While this is fictional, it does reflect upon my life. Written March 27th, 2002 © on Mar 26 2002 04:36 PM PST, Brazos Mason 0 • 9
