Abandoned!
By Buzby
Deserted by his family, he is lost and all alone He roams the city’s dirty streets, no place left to call home His coat once black and shiny, is now dull and full of knots How good it felt to be brushed clean, he almost has forgot A loving word a kindly pat, are things he has no more When nights are cold and wet he wishes life was like before Now he raids the dustbins for whatever he can find Whimpering in the dark, as memories come to mind Thinking of the people he had thought were lifetime friends They always seemed so happy, when did all the good times end? He could not remember a time, he had failed to offer love Could not imagine what he’d done, to deserve that final shove A night-time trip out in the car, he thought it would be neat He thought he’d get a midnight stroll, not a life-time on the street They opened up the door, and pushed their loving pet dog out He gazed with puzzled eyes, as they turned the car about He chased them for a while, as they sped off through the night They shouldn’t leave him here alone, he knew it wasn’t right But the car just kept on going, not giving him a chance No second thoughts, no change of mind, no final backward glance He waited for his family, to come and take him home It was weeks before he realised, he was lost and all alone So now, he is a street dog, full of fleas and thick with dirt Craving human company, but so scared of getting hurt He hugs the night-time shadows, the tiny comfort that they give And he spends his waking hours, just finding food to live.
