Autumn's Assault
By Buzby
AUTUMN’S ASSAULT They started falling early September Drops of colour landing on the lawn Nature’s dead skin dropping in my garden In October it began to rain The ground beneath our feet became swampy Leaves sodden and trodden into the ground By mid-November all the leaves were raked autumn’s colours heaped by the dustbin Trees stood bare, and the lawn prepared for winter. December brought high winds and biting cold The smart money was on a white Christmas And the garden pond wore a sheet of ice Two long, cold weeks into January And the promised snow finally arrived The garden was pretty; yet alien By February the snow had melted Dissolved into the ground, revealing A sick looking lawn, more yellow than green As prophesised March winds did indeed blow A branch was torn from my apple tree Leaving behind it a large gaping wound In April the weather settled down again New leaves were unfolding on all the plants - Even in my weather-ravaged garden May found me outside in my oldest clothes Secatures once again clutched in my hand Gently repairing Mother nature’s care. June came and brought some sunshine with it Weeding, planting, pruning, seeding, mowing All suddenly seemed much less of a chore July brought long evenings and barbeques Blues, reds, whites and pinks adorned my garden - I watched with eyes proud as any mother’s August drew to an uneventful close Lingering on the edge of summer Poised, ready to hurl autumn at the world.I've literally only just written this. I usually don't post stuff straight away, I like to read things over a few times to see where I can make improvements, but I thought I'd throw this out and see what improvements you can come up with! :o) Written January 31st, 2002 © on Jan 31 2002 03:31 AM PST 0 • 10
