Fire Starter
By Buzby
Her life was going nowhere, she was clinging to a ledge So she drew the match from out the box, and struck it on the edge She clutched it in her fingers, mesmerised by tiny light She felt its orange heat, and she laughed with sheer delight She shook her box of matches, plenty of them left So she lit another one, no need to stop just yet When the box was almost empty, just a single match remained She doused her house in petrol, and sent it up in flames From in the house there came a cry, her face began to grin As she pictured the powerful fire, consuming the evil within. She felt wonderfully alive, a feeling of release Of being free at last, of finding inner peace Suddenly the fire was gone, the flames, the heat all died She found herself in her bed, her husband at her side As the peaceful feelings left her, and the rage came flooding in She knew that she was trapped in a game she’d never win Fingertips probed gently at her bruises, as she wept As she cried her silent anguish, her bully husband slept She knew approaching dawn would bring another day of war And a thousand false apologies, for the pain of night before She watched her husband sleeping, then sadly turned away Matches clutched in shaky hand, thinking, maybe one day If the courage of the dreams could be real within her flesh If she could only find the strength she would torch this whole damn mess Burn away the bad stuff, the hurt the pain the fear Cauterise the wounds, and dry up every tear Eliminate the problem, take the joker from the pack Erase the dirty stain, remove the monkey from her back He had stolen all her innocence, her passion and desire The time would come, she’d wipe the slate, replace the chalk with fireI wrote this ages ago and I know that technically it's not a very good poem, but I thought there were some here who may enjoy it anyway.
