A Trip to the Grocery Store
By colleen
We were too embarrassed To admit we were the ones with the food stamps. We'd play near the soda and gumball machines, The magazine racks Reading of celebrities Living our dream lives While we turned our backs To you swallowing your pride In front of the check-out girl Who drove mommy and daddy's new BMW To work that afternoon. And we walked giant steps ahead Laughing about the gossip at school Then, once we were a safe distance From the discount grocery store, We'd walk side by side with you, Unaware of the tears in your eyes As you struggled with the heavy bags And felt the shame Flow from your daughters' faces Who played oblivious to their own poverty While they danced around in uniforms For a school you'd be paying off Until you're well in your grave.
