Summer Memories
By colleen
A time when Hyacinth and coconut-scented sunblock filled the airWas the last timeThat you willingly spoke to me.Even then,I'm sure the fact that we worked togetherDidn't have anything to do withThe words that were spokenWith a strange and uncomfortable effort between us.Even thenYour happy and loving smile was gone,A cold and empty stare was left in its place. While we were being splashed By children in love with their innocense,We both pretended not to be bothered By the fact that the endWas looming over our heads,A change that was inevitable,Couldn't be stoppedBut I continued to sit in denialSoaked past my shoulders,Bathing in a pool of chlorineAnd my own refusal to admit that I had fallen. While you pretended that nothing had ever happenedThat would make that summerStand outIn each of our minds more Than any other summer. And now whenever Anyone mentions the word 'summer'I am filled with regret That my tan was able to last longerThan we wereAnd that you'll probaly never knowJust how much it hurt To look directly at the sunIn the middle of the dayWhen it's rays were the strongest;Or to look directly into eyes once full of loveTo find an emptinessI'll never understand;Or how cold it was when You wouldn't share your towel at the end of a swimLike you used to with such care;Or how insanely it hurt To walk past your indifferenceInto the sunset,And our endingBefore I was ever able to say'I love you.'
