Appreciating Myself Appreciating myself A meditation for Kenyatta Things are things to remember when bills depress me employers stress me muscles ail me memory fails me checks bounce me I just had a prostate exam how embarrassing to bend over drop my pants and be touched by a stranger my goodness but bottom line my friend you are here and are now of a certain age when you must if you are to remain on this earth take care of your body think of the things you could not have done had you drowned years ago in a panic the proposals never written the connections never made the love not enjoyed and so what of this unpleasantness to detect a disease whose symptoms I am sure you will not want to experience impotence sleeplessness urine problems and then the final symptom the exam is a sign of your life your ease your ability to travel your access to health care your tax dollars paying for those human needs you promote with friends with strangers with party members with politicians but there is more you were so proud to be mentoring to be teaching younger people to be leaders taking up your causes you called out to them to represent to be antiracist without shame or guilt for being what they could not change the color of their skin the size and shape of their features their family history so now you are beyond racism venturing into other areas mental health gays and lesbians creativity drumming nonprofits good works ourselves our lives your love for a woman that you tried so often to throw away walk away run away from appreciate also that you are writing a gift not everyone possesses nor do they possess their own computer in a nice house heated and with electricity in a quiet neighborhood where you know the computer will be waiting for you when you return from therapy from your work and from the world and lest you forget the senses that it takes to write my friend although there is Braille your eyes can see your hands can move to type your brain can send the messages to your eyes and hands and know that they will respond the music in the background that you hear puts you in the mellow mood a woman singing what’s new but the question is not what’s new but what’s still there and that’s you and that’s you baby so jus’ enjoy it!Reposted from Story Area Written April 7th, 2002 © on Apr 07 2002 04:29 AM PST 0 • 13
