Nell O'Leary

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

This is the tale of Nell O'Leary, a lass whose beauty turned every eye teary. She had fiery red hair and emerald green eyes, and with creamy white skin, she caused copious sighs. Nell was the belle of the town of Dun Laoghaire. Her heart matched her beauty, bright and cheery. To win over sweet Nell the beaus all did their part, but, it was Rory O'Dell who stole her heart. His dashing good looks won him sweet Nell, though she never understood why they met by the well. The courtship progressed and soon they were married, concern crossed her brow, by the well he still tarried. Fear gripped her heart when Rory went missing, she ran out by the well where they used to go kissing. Like the dew on a petal, softly she said: "May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead." Then up from the town came harrowing cries, and the bottle at her foot spoke of his lies. After Rory she went, her countenance frightening, those beautiful eyes flashed green lightening. On his knees, he said: "Nell, please be forgiving." and that cute elfin grin let him keep living. With reform, this storm, they were able to weather, and as their love grew, it became sweet as the heather.February 2001, Dun Laoghaire is the Gaelic spelling of the town pronounced (Dun-Leery) Written January 10th, 2002 © on Jan 10 2002 03:42 AM PST   0 • 10
