Christmas and Darkness
Did you ever think that winter darkness is at its height on 25th December? When the light of day disappears early, and the darkness of the night appears too early And night is really dark? Dark for those who thrive in darkness This darkness scares; it diminishes the hope of seeing light It is a bother to lighted hearted people like me and you It leaves me sad, restless, anxious, hopeless and fearful In real need of redemption from this darkness Why Christmas on this dark night? Why on 25th? Is it not a battle between light and darkness? And who wins? For what? For whom? and for who? There must be a winner anyway! I had never thought so until my friend told me that the battle is within us. He said, "don’t look far, darkness is here and is powerful. It is in the countless murders, in terrorism, in wars, in hatred, in anger, in revenge…" But where is our Christmas light then? Is it not in the hope we have that some day things will work out better? If only we prepared for the worst while hoping for the best! This is my reflection on the meaning of Christmas for me in the contemporary world today.
