The Cynic's Watch

By Rambler

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

Cynical eyes survey the human scene Accustomed and expectant To spy misshapen forms Of aborted hope and choked potential Maintaining effortless dominance of panoramic sweep By nature weak Yet strong through slavish consent Of upright souls bearing groveling hearts Stumbling in gullible sloth’s dim vision Seeing no distinctions Homogenized horizons subsumed under incantations Equality! Relative! Tolerance! So by self-righteous certitude And a multiplication of cheap legitimacies The sick appear well Solipsistic overflow turns cogent stream Light for darkness, darkness for light Idols of abstraction claim sacred center A leveled realm absent wrong or right Save in relation to the measuring stick Coercion Shedding its thin veils of feigned toleration Emboldened through consent’s servile surrender Unafraid to display gross inconsistencies As the sheep bleat in obscene contentment Cynical eyes survey weariness unutterable Astonished at waste’s abundance And the ubiquitous free thinkers Who ensure copious redundancy of the parrot’s role Astonished at the myriad captives Proclaiming freedom with enslaved hearts Hoping for the eviction day Of reality’s vile usurper Written February 27th, 2002 © on Feb 27 2002 10:51 AM PST, Bruce Newman   0 • 1
