If I Do Nothing

By Trish MacQueen

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

If I do nothing, in this world, but make you see The others, in this world, who suffer needlessly. In a country that's at war, while it's citizens cry out and flee. From their brutal surroundings, so their children can be free. If I do nothing, in this world, but make you hear The others, in this world, who live in constant fear. In a country that's not free, from racial slurs…so clear. And hateful surroundings, that affect the children, so dear. If I do nothing, in this world, but make you smell. The others, in this world, who's souls we cannot sell. And those countries with nuclear bombs, that create a living hell. In devastated surrounding, that don't suit our children, very well. If I do nothing, in this world, but make you think About the others, in this world, who live on the brink. In a country that has famine, and death decaying stink. In these barren surroundings, the little children shrink. If I do nothing, in this world, but make you speak out For others, in this world, who cannot cry out or shout. In a country that has child abuse, that is not talked about. And adult surroundings, where children live with doubt. If I do nothing, in this world, but make you question why. The others, in this world, must choose to live or die. In other countries, in this world, far enough away, for us, to deny. These problematic surroundings, with little children you can buy.  If I do nothing, in this world, but make you read something new, everyday. The others in this world, the children, may survive death for another day. While many countries, in this world, need care and compassion, without delay. And, as a writer, I hope you gain that compassion, through what I've had to say. Written April 6th, 2002 © on Apr 05 2002 11:43 PM PST   0 • 12
