Back roads

By Verse Us

My life flashes before my eyes.   It's funny though, I'm still alive.   So quickly paced. I guess that's why,   I took the backroads home.   I remember now how it was,   wide highways blocked with all the fuss.   NO! No Greyhounds, not for us.   I took the backroads home.   I detoured on that dusty pass.   Thought of, but never stopped for gas.   All the while knowing I'd bust my...   But, I took the backroads home.   I was racing through, just one day,   when there stood a fork in my way.   "Just why did I," but I could not say,   "take the backroads home?"   Should I turn left? Or go on right?   I had to think fast, for on came night.   I realized I's losin' this fight.   That's why I took the backroads home.   I struck my hands on the steering wheel.   "Oh, my Lord!" could this be real?   I's so mad, I's ready to kill,   suddenly, the car died on this backroad home.   Then my rantin' turned to fear.   My eyes became filled with tears.   I saw some weirdo comin' near,   on that dark, and lonely backroad home.   He persisted to tap on the glass.   How slow the time seemed to pass.   Through my sobs, I heard him ask,   "You need some help gettin' home?"   I noticed then my cars condition.   It started fine, but the transmission,   refused to recall it's urgent mission.   "God, why'd I take the backroads home?"   My stomach, sim to the engine, turned,   over and over, like milk being churned.   If I get home alive, I'll know I've learned,   Never to take the back roads home!   Hysterical, I unlocked the doors.   "Okay man, I lose. I'm yours."   I got out and it began to pour.   I was sure I'd die on the backroads home.   The man jumped into the drivers side.   I contemplated running to hide,   but instead got in for the ride.   The car rode smooth and He took me home.   Fear paced through me once again.   Was he going to kill my family and friends?   Did I tell him where I lived? Forbid!   Atleast I won't die on the backroads home.   He put out His hand, and I drew back.   Then I realized he's making a pact.   I thanked Him for bringing me back,   to my home, my million dollar shack.     My heart was changed that night with Him.   He's my savior, my friend, one in the same.   But He never left, after he came.   He drove the car from the backroads home.
