What is important?

By Burden of Atlas

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

I wake up one day and decide to take a closer look at the world A closer look at the people within it, and what they deem important I catch the bus and sit, not going anywhere in particular, just going As I sit on the bus I see the myriad of people whom are my brethren They who make up our society and establish our rules and taboos I see the shallowness of their lives, the facades that envelope them and the insubstantial trinkets they put so much stock into. All their possessions and all of their dreams of grandeur Cannot hide the empty soul that rests within, unfulfilled For it is in their fear of disgrace, embarrasment, and failure That they sow the seeds of discontent and endless wanting I walk by a fancy restaurant in my jeans and t-shirt I see the wealthy businessmen inside look out at me They smile secretly, for they feel their success makes them superior In my eyes, they are worse off than those who have nothing For now their life shall be spent endlessly consolidating their wealth And should they lose it, they will suffer greater than those who never had All these thoughts run through my head, and one other of importance Am I any different? I look at my clothes, my want of money, and I say no I wonder if I'm worse. In seeing these things, I should be able to change. And yet, I seem content to follow in the footsteps of my kind I only hope, one day I may find something more important. If a blind man falls in a hole, it is an unfortunate accident If a man who can see falls into the same hole, it's carelessness.
