As you sleep

By FranticFad

Topics: Poetry Source: AllPoetry Original source

The sun broke in scattered, pale shafts Casting wan, shy light across your sleeping face I drew a breath and looked upon you Lost, as always, in the glory of my need for you I feared the spell might break A slight noise or sudden draft that might awaken you A soft moan, a slight sigh Wakefulness comes upon you, teased by the soft morning light Your heavy lashes rise across your enchanting hazel eyes Your gaze falls upon me, and drops Taking with it my heart, as I see the contempt again Illusions scatter like frightened spirits as you turn away My chest pulls tight, clasping my sore heart I draw a slow, deep breath, unwilling to display the edge of pain How can you no longer even care that I hurt How can you no longer even hurt that I care Did you love me, I wonder Those long ago days, in our lost, lamented youth The smiles, the tender words, were they plumbed from your heart Or were they instead, only pleasant gestures of the fire of youth A day of pain, of fear that I will tread athwart your anger A day of shame where I speak of caring that happens no more A day lost to time, where we speak not at all, and share even less I long for the night, when you will sleep again And I watch, as you breath slowly in the gloom of our giant, cold bed Laying a soft hand upon your shoulder, careful not to awaken you I let myself sleep and I lie as I go Loving you Believing you might still know how Might still wish Might, if only just now Love me too Written February 4th, 2002 © on Feb 04 2002 04:41 AM PST   0 • 1
