The thin air wafted softly across the hard craggy edges of the mountain’s spine, lifting the edges of the bold lichens that dared to live in such a lofty aerie. As I lifted my gaze from my dusty, worn boots a saber of cold sunlight pierced my soul. Thrown from the back of an azure mountain tarn, the light traveled leagues in an instant, the paltry details of time and space of no consequence to such an ethereal harbinger. Thin clouds of ice and frozen sky held court high above, for on this day, this one unseasoned moment in a Colorado’s winter, I was touched by the very hand of my creator, thrown beyond the pale concerns of human want, into the terrifying abyss of the infinite. At once greater than many, yet less than one, I was drawn across vast distances, but held small in my place.
