The Lily in the Swamp
By gregpoet
The awful stench that filled my nostrils made me want to run away; but still I stayed. Rooted to the spot, Enthralled. Relentlessly, the spurned insects with vengeful action showed their wrath. They bit me, stung me, tried their best to eat me; but intruder though I was I resisted my impulse, and rooted to the spot, I stayed. Then the murky darkness lifted and I saw it there revealed, such a vision caused my pulse to race. This was the reason all the suffering and discomfort of this place could not move me from this spot where I stayed. The most beautiful water-lily that I have ever seen, stood tall in all its full resplendent glory. A blend of colours mixed to match by an artistry divine; I stood there captivated, so completely. I felt compelled to watch it. Unblinkingly I stared at it. Was all at once inspired by it, could help not but be awed by it. Overwhelmed was I by such a vivid beauty. Though incredible, it may seem this one plant transformed the scene, changing darkness into light that dazzled me. All the dankness dissipated and my self-esteem was lifted, for this battle had been fought and won for me. So the lesson that was taught me relates to one's ability, to learn to conquer all adversity. It's not the place from whence you came that needs dictate your final destination. But more-so the way you live and the strength of character from inside that helps you conquer any situation. I stood there for a moment more not having understood before how a scene like this can play a vital part. Then I turned and walked away, left this dank and dreary place, with my lesson etched for ever in my heart.
