Iris Rules My World
By zuzus petals
In my world, Iris’ light is reflected Off of crystals hanging in the window. Children reach for them with tiny hands To move the garish light about the walls And to watch the jewel-like pendulums Swing back and forth after release. The rhythmic motion of glinting light on white walls Lulls me to sleep and dream, To mark time while my eyes are closed. My head bobs beneath the surface of tranquil waters; Heavy with slumber; yearning for exile. I dream alone (as I often do) afraid to wake And see that the pendulum is still swinging. I know it waits for me to awaken, To prove that beneath my trembling lids time ceases to change, No sun rises at dawn, no moon waxes at night, But above the glass like surface Light continues to bend and swirl; Still marking seconds, minutes, and hours And shedding age on once youthful faces, Stealing wonder from the hands That used reach for the crystals in the window. In my world Iris taunts me with patterns of light Streaming through the window And dares me to dream, To wake once more and see it through different eyes.
