Caleb's Flight
By kvwriter
Caleb's Flight Oh little one, where are you now? Where have you come to be? I long for your innocense and for your smile to see. I miss your laughter in the days when hope was somehow gone, You brought me from the deep abyss and carried me along. It was your strength that pulled us through when ours was drained away. You brightened up the darkest hour and the darkest day. Did you really understand a life so incomplete? Or did you feel betrayed, and with death could not compete? Are you close enough to see a tear slide from my eye? Can you hear me call you name in a whispered sigh? Are there children with you now, little girls and boys? Do you share a similar tale of pains as well as joys? Is your world a better place? Does Jesus hold you hand? Are you smiling down at me from your distant land? I know the sickness is now gone and plagues you never more. Defeat has left the battleground and left the winning score. I hear your giggles in my dreams, I see your innocent gaze, I feel the heartbeat of your soul, when I touch you through the haze. We know you're near us, little one, and we would be so proud To watch you ride, forevermore, your bicycle on a cloud . . . kvwriter/Kelly JohnsonThis was written for Marie, a mother to five-year-old Caleb who died young from an incurable disease. Marie is a good friend of mine and I babysat Caleb for her. He was a precious, innocent child, so happy and content, and yet dying. I wrote the poem which is now engraved on a tombstone in Monte Vista, Colorado, my birthplace. The strange thing is, Caleb had been asking his parents, "When I get to heaven, will I be able to ride my bicycle?" I knew nothing of this when I handed over the poem. And, such are the mysteries of life that make us wonder . . . kvwriter/Kelly Written August 23rd, 1987 © on Feb 23 2002 05:40 AM PST, Kelly Varner Johnson 0 • 1
